How to do a REVS check in NSW

REVS check NSW

When buying a new car in or from New South Wales, it is best to complete a REVS check NSW if the car is registered in that state.

Officially, the REVS checking system has been replaced with the PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register). Most Australians are very familiar with the REVS check, and many will still call it that.

A REVS check NSW can tell you a lot of information about a particular car; it'll provide a rego check that details when this expires, if there is a loan attached to the vehicle (often referred to as a lien), if the car was reported as stolen, or if it has been written off in an accident (this may make it harder to find insurance).

At RevsCheck, we can also provide a CarHistory Report that details the vehicle's history. The CarHistory Report can give you an indication if the car is worth what the seller claims (with a valuation guide) and factual details about the car. You can then use the information to negotiate a better deal with the seller.

What is a REVS check?

A REVS check (sometimes called the vehicle reg check) is the older form of the PPSR check.

The PPSR is the official government register and replaced the REVS check in all states of Australia.

This change was meant to simplify the system as the PPSR covers all types of securities, except for real estate. Under the old system, over 30 registries were operating, making it difficult to find out security information. The REVS system was also limited to your particular state, so if you were living in New South Wales, completing a VIC rego check was challenging.

The PPSR (or REVS) is designed to show you if a used car has a security claim against it. With some loans, the lender may require an item as security to protect themselves in case the person taking out the loan cannot make the repayments.

If you happen to purchase a vehicle with a lien, and the payments on that loan stop, the lender can repossess the vehicle and sell it to recover their costs.

Any vehicle repossession will see you out of pocket, and while you may attempt to sue the seller, it is best to avoid the problem altogether. By completing a REVS check in NSW, or any other state of Australia, it'll show you if the car you're about to buy has any financial obligations.

How long does a REVS check take?

When you complete a REVS check NSW, it only takes a few minutes for you to receive your paperwork. The speed at which the reports can be sent to you is one of the advantages of using REVS check.

You can complete a VIN check in Australia and have the reports quickly, and this means you can get the information while you're looking at the car or taking it for a test drive. As you can complete the rego check online, you can do it from the comfort of your own home and at any time you please.

Shopping online for a car or any vehicle is becoming more and more common as people are more comfortable getting away from car yards. There are even some delivery car yards popping up, where you can buy a car online, and they'll deliver it to your home. With these options available to you, they'll often provide the VIN and rego details on the sales page.

Having access to these details makes getting the REVS check NSW even easier because you can copy and paste the information directly into the RevsCheck search bar.

How to do a REVS check?

As checking the history and security details of a vehicle is essential, we've made the process straightforward. The only details you need to complete a REVS check NSW are the rego plate numbers, VIN, and car make and model.

Most people choose to enter the rego number into the RevsCheck search, which is enough to perform the PPSR check. After you search up the vehicle with the rego number, we'll show you the make and model and the first few digits of the VIN. You can check that these details match the car you're searching for, and if they are, you can order a PPSR certificate or a CarHistory Report.

If you're at the preliminary phase of finding a car, you may prefer to get a PPSR certificate on the cars you're looking to buy and then a CarHistory Report on those cars that you want to put an offer on.

If you're only looking at one particular car, the CarHistory Report offers more detailed information and better value, such as a stolen car check, a registration check, an odometer check, etc.

The CarHistory Report will give you a valuation guide for the car you're buying, and that can tell you if you're getting a good deal or not.

The CarHistory Report and PPSR certificate will detail the registration of the vehicle. If the rego is about to run out, the seller may be more motivated to sell the vehicle. This means you can negotiate a better price, as it's likely the seller would instead dispose of the car rather than pay for another year of rego.
